Camera Critters - Post 85

Butterfly on Abelia

I think this is a Black Swallowtail butterfly, but am not sure. Information from anyone who knows is welcome! The only photo I could get was of its underside; the upper side of the wings are more colorful.

Camera Critters is the creation of Misty Dawn. To see others' photos for this week, visit here.

  5. I do think that's a ~spicebush swallowtail~ (that's according to Klaus at http://virtua-gallery.com/wp/)

Whatever it is, it's a beautiful photo, Pat.

  6. I love the Black Swallowtail almost as much as the Monarch...maybe more! And I love the Preying Mantis, too...odd, I know! My Grandmother wouldn't allow them to be called devils walking sticks around her...and she always spelled it Praying Mantis...altho she knew better!

  12. I love the motion of this beautiful butterfly and the angle at which it is photographed says that it is in flight. I think you're right that its a Black Swallowtail. I had that species in my garden only once a few years ago. Lucky you for seeing one. This is a lovely photo!

  16. Some butterflies just don't like their photo taken. However, I think I would go with this one being an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. I've been known to be wrong, but it looks a lot like a tiger.
