ABC Wednesday - "N"

"N" is for Nest

While visiting a friend a few days ago, I noticed that a mama Blue Jay had built a nest on top of the security light in her carport. I don't think I've ever seen a jay's nest before, and I was amazed at the size of the sticks and twigs she used. There's a plastic bag in there, too; for cushioning, perhaps? When I inquired, I learned that the light had been turned off when they discovered the nest building going on. That is a good thing; I imagine that a halogen light would put out enough heat to bake the eggs.

  2. Gee Pat... I have never seen a jay's nest anywhere. That is so unusual to see their nest on top of those flood lights... Unbelievable..

Follow through with us --and let us know if there are some little bluejays in that nest.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. Wow, how cool is that. I bet the heat from those lights could cause dry twigs to burn it would for sure melt the plastic bag. Beautiful picture.

  10. Hey, Pat, since you like photos, I'm sending you a link to my favorite photo site. I can't read a word that's printed there, but I sure get some terrific desktops.

  11. Interesting. I would have thought the jays would have been scared off the first time the lights came on, but I guess your friends turned them off before that had a chance to happen? Nice of them.
