Today's Flowers - August 9

Mutant Cone Flower

While I was running around a couple of weeks ago snapping photos of flowers, I ran across this unusual growth. The flower head has other small, misshaped cone flowers growing from the top. It's growing in my gardening daughter's wildflower garden, so I'll be able to keep an eye on it to see what happens as it matures. I thought it was interesting.

    How very interesting! The photographer in me would have named this "A Study in Monochrome Green."

    I love photos that are all one color yet have dimension.

    I once had a primrose that did the same thing - it appeared to sprout a many stalked primula from its top. Guess Nature has an occasional off day, like humans!

    I don't have cone flowers like this but I do have some that are mis-shapen due to being whipped by decorative grass. I also have sunflowers like this.

    OH OH! I hope it's not a virus. I seem to recall something about a virus attacking Echinaceas. But it makes for an interesting photo!

    That is one flower really gone wild...I've had some that were "double deckers" but this one is unique...like a little island with trees.

    Very interesting how new flowers grow from the top. I wonder what went wrong in its DNA! I have seen similar in other plants. For sure different!

    Just a note...

    That's what I have been doing Pat, taking off one or more limbs at a time, trying to save what is left. I took a photo today of some sparrows in the tree and when I looked at the photo I see a lot of leaves look scorched. And it isn't sun or heat as it has been cool here and the tree gets some shade in the heat of every day. So I think it either has some disease or that freeze and busted limbs did something bad to it.

    Pat the mutation is due to 'Round-up', a supposedly non-toxic broad-leved weedicide made by Monsanto. This chemical drifts on the wind over a large area when airially sprayed. Our neighbours sprayed for cockchafers and 4km away we lost all our frogs on our property over 500 acres. Often men get addicted to wanting to spray weeds, mine too, so when he carefully sprayed around the outside of our garden fenceline, a little must have got a little on my rose.

    Hi Pat, I've enjoyed catching up on your posts this past week. You really were a sick little gal, weren't you???? Scary!!!! And--you have never had any trouble with that ear since then???? Wow--that's amazing. And--I'm glad that it didn't effect your hearing. Praise God.

    I laughed when you talked about being skinny. I was born FAT --and never ever ever ever could say that I was skinny...Darn!!!!!
