A Sight I Might Not See Again

While I was a way on a nice, long visit to my daughter's home in Nebraska, the Sanseveria (Mother-in-Law's Tongue/Snake Plant) that I've had for years put up a flower stalk.  Gardening Daughter tells me that she's never before seen one in bloom, but from research on the web I learned that the plant is a regular bloomer, under the right conditions.  My absence must have been the condition.   Since some web information said these plants may bloom only once every ten years, I truly might not see it bloom again.

The blooms are pretty, but slightly malodorous.  Google comments on the plant contain reports of the blooms smelling slightly of carnation, but such is not the case here.  It's not bad enough to put it outside, but I wouldn't want a bouquet of them.

I'll get back to my "Butterflies and Memories" posts soon, along with some snippets about my trip to Nebraska.  I had a lot to do to get ready for my trip, and a lot to do upon my return, besides which driving almost 700 miles in one day sort of wore me out.  Missed you all.  I'll be trying to catch up, soon.

I have never seen a sanseveria plant in bloom in all my born days. Thank you.

Did I ever tell you that I lived in Nebraska from 1962 through 1965 and that my oldest child was born there? Mrs. RWP and I lived in Bellevue so that I could commute easily to SAC Headquarters. Your 700-mile trip sounds like your destination was much further west in the state.

I always enjoy your blogging and your photography.

Usually, before they die [if these are the same plants we had in Mexico] they produce lots of new plants around their feet.

700 miles in one day??!!!!! I can't do that. I'm good for about an hour and 1/2 and then have to stop and walk for awhile. My back just doesn't allow for much more than that. I'm amazed!!!

Can't wait to hear about Nebraska.

I did know that a sanseveria would bloom. You've taken good care of the plant ... miss green thumb!

wow, never say this before. I have a quite large one that spends its summers outside and grows like a weed. Here's hoping mine blooms. I had a jade plant once that did. It was gorgeous!

If you can drive 700 miles in one day, you are doing great! Some of my viburnum smell like carrion, so a slightly stinky snake plant would not bother me at all.

Never seen a Sanseveria flower either. I'm sure your going away had nothing to do with it.

I wondered if you or the computer was on a long vacation...maybe both. I have a ton more of Naked Ladies blooming.

It's really cool when a plant does something you're not expecting!

What a lovely plant and lovely photos too! It is wonderful what beauty can be achieved with just green and white if the form is good. I'm thinking quite a bit about snow drops at the moment, as it is almost that time of the year for us, and once again there is something beautiful with really simple colouring!

Goodness, 700 miles in one day! That distance is possible in New Zealand, but I think that you would run out of land sometime on the second day if you tried for another 700 miles and end up getting wet! Our Islands are a bit short!

That is new to me also. Quite lovely.
Looking forward to your pictures of Nebraska. Another state I have yet to visit.
I too am impressed with 700 miles in one day. I have done it but it is a grind.
