Sky Watch - March 5

(photo may be enlarged by clicking on it)

This afternoon was balmy, around 75 degrees, with a strong, warm wind from the south. I was engaged in some long-overdue leaf raking when I stopped to catch my breath and wipe my brow. When I looked up, I put down my rake, took off my gloves, went inside to get the camera and take this shot. I love to see the moon in the daytime! Photo was snapped just before 5 p.m.

Sky Watch - February 27

Sky to the Southeast

Sky Above

Sky to the West

As seen at around 9:30 this morning. We're supposed to have a change in weather today but, since I'm not our friend DewDrop, my favorite cloud-interpreter, I can't tell from looking just what that might be. Time will tell. I do know that it's much cooler this morning.

Sky Watch

"... and Evening Gray,
send the travelers on their way."

The photo above was taken just before sundown on Tuesday evening. It was an almost colorless sunset. Wednesday morning dawned bright and clear, and we had sunshine all day -- perfect for traveling. Perhaps there is something to the old saying, after all.

The sky is lovely.
Lines and trees get in the way;
Not the best photo.

Sky Watch From My Front Door

After a scare earlier in the week (Winter Storm Watch) which turned out to give us only a short-lived light ice coating on Monday night/Tuesday morning, we have lots of sunshine today, and not a cloud in the sky! We have much to be thankful for here in central Arkansas when we consider the weather-related trauma occuring in other parts of the U.S., and in other parts of this state. When I looked outside this afternoon, there was not a cloud to be seen anywhere. The blue skies captured by my camera have not been altered in any way. What you see is what we've got.

New Year's Day Sky Watch - Faster than a Speeding Bullet

Not a cloud in the sky today, this first day of the new year. When I lifted my eyes to the heavens, about the only thing that caught my eye was an airplane's contrail as it approached a very pale crescent moon (you have to look closely to even see the moon; it's that little white speck almost dead center of the frame above and just ahead of and slightly below the leading edge [right] of the contrail.)

Seven seconds later, yes, just seven seconds (I am amazed at the information stored by my camera), the photo above shows the relative positions of both. The moon sliver is almost centered below the visible contrail. That plane was moving pretty fast.

Sky Watch - The Morning and the Evening

Christmas Day Morning

The skies were full of contrails; the ethereal reminders of aircraft coming and going. In my imagination, each plane was filled with happy travelers, making a last minute journey in hopes of being at home with their loved ones on Christmas Day.

Christmas Day Evening

Skies overcast with a tiny bit of the soon-to-be-setting sun coloring the undersides of the clouds with the barest hint of gold. A peaceful end to a special day.

Sky Watch

Scudding across the sky, driven by a bitterly cold north wind, the gathering clouds announce that Winter is here, even though the official date for the season is a couple of days away. Don't let those glimpses of blue sky fool you; there was an impending ice storm in those clouds.

Sky Watch - Ouachita National Forest

( please click to enlarge photo)

I had the pleasure of accompanying my daughter and her husband on a brief trip to eastern Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago. This photo was taken from a Scenic Overlook on Highway 259, where the Talimena Trail crosses from Arkansas into Oklahoma. This part of the country is really beautiful. Enlarging the photo permits you to see some of the color that is still left amidst all the evergreens.

Sky Watch - Wild Goose, Brother Goose

Our area has quite a few resident geese, but the numbers increase exponentially during migration in spring and fall. These geese flew over at dusk a couple of weeks ago, on their way to a small lake just north of town. I never tire of the beauty of these birds in flight, or of hearing their honking as they traverse the skies.

Sky Watch - Delicate Sunset - Post 103

Sunset November 3, 2008 - Hwy. 5 North, White County, Arkansas

On the way back home from a jaunt earlier this week, the beautiful colors of the sunset caught my eye. The sun had been a blazing ball of brilliant peachy-red, and colored the unclouded sky with the most amazing colors. I think it must have been dust particles that picked up the glorious tints. Within 2 minutes of taking the photo above, all the color was gone. I did no 'doctoring' on this photo; it's as it came straight from the camera, with tiny bit of cropping to eliminate a powerline pole.

Sky Watch - Post 97

It's a gorgeous, bright, not too chilly Autumn day today. Perfect weather! Not a cloud in the sky this afternoon, so this photo is a Sky and Tree watch. I've been keeping a close watch on our neighborhood trees, monitoring the color change daily. My neighbor has a Sycamore tree in her front yard (the brown-yellow-green leaves on the left of the photo). The tree beyond is also a Sycamore, but the leaves have a more reddish tint. I love Mother Nature!

Sky Watch - Post 91

October 23 Sky

East, West and South skies here are mostly overcast today, but I did find a spot of blue looking across the street to the Northwest. We're in for some rain later this evening, I believe. It hasn't been cold enough, yet, for the leaves to show much change in color; here in central Arkansas they're still mostly green. I did spot a branch of dogwood in the back garden next door that had some beautiful color and got a photo, but no sky was showing, so that's a post for another time.

Sky Watch - Post 84

Nothing but blue skies do I see!

A hint of fall is in the air here in Arkansas, with temps falling into the 50's at night. A bit of color is showing in the leaves of the crepe myrtle in my yard; I thought it made a nice contrast to the uninterrupted blue of the sky today.

Sky Watch - Post 81

Not a cloud to be seen anywhere today! Hooray!

We've had quite enough rain lately, thank you, so it's nice to look out my front door this morning and see clear, blue skies. To keep you from having to look at a totally blue photo, I included a couple of trees in my shot. Thanks to cooler weather, the maple tree across the street is beginning to get a few tinges of fall color. For some interesting information on what causes changes in foliage color, visit Jeannelle's post today on her blog Midlife by Farmlight .

Sky Watch - Post 66

Before the Storm

Usually, by the time I figure out that it's really going to rain, I'm already getting sprinkled on. This time was an exception. I was able to get off a few shots before the deluge and caught some rain-laden clouds, a bit of clear sky and a bonus; a tiny moon. And, yes, it did "come a gully washer" out of those clouds.

Sky Watch - Post 56

Just another pretty sky

I haven't been out and about this week to photograph anything particularly "interesting," so I just stood in my front yard and snapped a photo of the evening sky. This is just as it came from the camera; Mother Nature has an always changing and amazing palette.
