Formidable Fungus

Giant Fungus

I was out and about for a while today with camera in hand. While visiting Gardening Daughter, she said "you ought to see the mushrooms in the yard next door." What to my eyes and lens should appear but a whole chain of fungi the size of the one pictured above. Lest one should think that I, and my camera, exaggerate, please note the United States legal tender quarter dollar resting on the upper section of said fungus.

I'm sure there are larger examples of fungi elsewhere in blogdom, but these were the largest ones I've ever seen.

More, later.

Nature is wonderful....
Can you imagine a small creature finding that in a rainstorm and thinking, "Ah...a shelter...just for me!"
I like the way you put the quarter on it to let us know the size.

That is one HUGE mushroom, Pat... Gads---we have them around here but I don't remember seeing one THAT big. Guess they like all of the rain we have had this summer!!!

Have a good weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

Sheesh!

Yeah, that would qualify as a biggie. The scale provided by the coin gives a good idea of its size.

That's a big'un, Pat. I often wonder who was the very first person to look at a mushroom, frog,snail...and say 'I think I'll eat that.'

I love that photo Pat! I would have loved to see the expression on your face when you first saw it!

That's not a fungus..., it is a flying saucer! I am sure that careful investigation would reveal a command station on board filled with small green aliens with enormous IQs, big heads, adorable smiles, and one or more goggly eyes. They come in peace... (I hope) and they form circles as mutual protection.

Those little tire nubs around the perimeter seem unnatural. But very cool!

It looks like a designer mushroom with its own logo in the middle. Just ignore the coin. lol. Pretty cute Ma'am Pat!
