More Blooms

In one of my earliest posts, I wrote about the Mophead Hydrangea pictured above. It was planted in the spring of 1965. At the time, it was just a florist's potted hydrangea that had been sent to our family at the time of my father's death in January of that year.  It has grown quite large over the years and is one of my pride and joy plants.  Yesterday morning, it was covered with blooms in various stages, as shown below.

 Just opened; still greenish white.

 Beginning to show a bit of blue.

 Getting there. Green gone; now pale blue and white.

 All blue, and about 6" or 7" across.

Other plants now in bloom in my front garden are:

 Heuchera Southern Comfort (coral bells)

I love those huge, bronze leaves!

 Variegated Hosta



Calibrachoa (million bells)

a gift from Gardening Daughter.

I do love this time of year!  

I suppose I could have used these photos for several posts, but other plants will be blooming tomorrow and in the following weeks.  I'll have "Springy" blog fodder for a while before the interminable summer heat arrives.

Tomorrow is also a day.

What starts out looking like this:

Soon turns into this.

My hydrangea bush is loaded down with blooms in all stages of development. Some are just emerging, others are in the half-way stage looking partly greenish-ivory - partly blue, while others have reached their peak of blueness. I never cease to get great enjoyment from looking at the blossoms. This particular plant came to my family as a gift at the time of my father's funeral in 1965 and has been growing on the northeast edge of my home since then.

End of Summer Hydrangea

I do love hydrangeas; when they first begin to open in late spring and are "unripe;" when they're fully mature in midsummer, and now, when they begin to dry on the bush. Each stage of their lives has its own beauty.

Hydrangea

The hydrangea bush bearing this not-quite-ready bloom was planted in my yard in 1965. The original plant was a gift from one of our church friends at the time of my father's funeral, in January, 1965. It was a beautiful pot-plant that we nurtured through the cold months inside the house. We planted it when the ground was warmed, late in the spring of that year. The bush is now about 6 feet wide and about 5 feet tall, and bears at least a hundred blooms each year. When fully matured, the blooms are a beautiful, slightly blue-violet all over.
