Sky Watch - Wild Goose, Brother Goose

Our area has quite a few resident geese, but the numbers increase exponentially during migration in spring and fall. These geese flew over at dusk a couple of weeks ago, on their way to a small lake just north of town. I never tire of the beauty of these birds in flight, or of hearing their honking as they traverse the skies.

Sky Watch was created by Dot, and expanded upon by Tom, who is retired. This weekly theme post is brought to you by our friends Klaus, Sandy, Fishing Guy, Ivar, Wren, and Louise. Visit the Sky Watch Friday home page anytime after 7:30 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time on Thursdays to see sky photos from around the world. You'll be glad you did.

I never tired of it, either. There do not seem to be as many here as I remember in Missouri. When I hear them here, they definitely capture my attention.

Beautiful photo!

What a perfect capture - the geese are looking for warmer weather! Maybe this cold caught them unawares too!

Really lovely photo Pat. I love geese, although I recognize they can be a nuisance in quantity. They are so cute and their honking when coming in the spring never fails to make me smile.

This photo is really wonderful!
It gets me excited because my family is going to Bosque del Apache Wildlife Preserve this weekend to celebrate the Festival of the Cranes.
There will be many bird species, but lots of geese, ducks and cranes, especially.

Happy Sky Watch Friday!

Wonderful photo! I know what you mean about always watching the geese!
And I even know the song you quote! Or is that showing our age?
Thank you for sharing.

Great photo, Pat! I read or heard somewhere that geese flying in V-formation honk to encourage the leader and to let him (or her) know they're all still there with him (or her). And when the leader gets tired, another goose from the ranks comes forward to take the lead position. We humans could learn a lot from these remarkable creatures.

Comment #2: Do you remember the old song by Frankie Laine, "I Must Go Where The Wild Goose Goes"? Every fall my dad would get a bad case of wanderlust when the geese came through.
