My neighbor's pretty dogwood tree
Bird sightings yesterday included the first hummingbird of the season. Gardening Daughter's advice to make nectar and put out the feeder was just in time. The little bird lingered only long enough for three or four sips, and since the feeder has been up for several days, I need to inspect the nectar to assure its freshness. I'd hate for a hummer to find my offering unpalatable.
Two Goldfinches, females, I think, made a brief appearance for a drink from the bird bath and moved on; their leaving was my clue to get out the Niger Thistle seed and refill the finch feeder.
Blue jays, cardinals and sparrows of various sorts are routine visitors. While Jays don't have what I would describe as a 'sweet' call, they, like the other birds, are more vocal right now, and the air around my home is filled with bird melodies. At first light this morning, the crape myrtle in my front yard was the grandstand from which the cardinals were serenading their lady-loves -- a wonderful sound to start my day.
The weather front which moved through the state on Monday (very wet and blustery) brought clear skies on its skirt-tails, and yesterday was a beautiful day. It's cooler this morning, and partly cloudy, but it looks like it's going to be a lovely Wednesday.
Tomorrow is also a day.

i love hearing the birds *speaking* to each other ... looking for a friend, warning others off, setting up their territory ... such a lively group! your neighbors have beautiful dogwoods.

I'm happy for you that your birds are busy in your yard. Those Jays are so bossy, aren't they? We had one warm day, last week, and our birds came back for a while. I filled the bird feeder and it took them awhile to find it, but they did. Your tree is a beautiful sight!
We don't have dogwood in bloom yet -- your neighbor's tree is beautiful. We're also enjoying the songs of many more birds. Thanks for the heads-up about hummingbirds -- I guess it's time to get our feeders up.
Oh what a grogeous lovely tree! don't you just love trees that sprawl their branches as if welcoming the world upon their lap?

Oh your season looks beautiful. We won't be seeing hummers here until mid June.
HI Pat, So you saw a Hummingbird???? Wow--I need to get my feeders out...
We have about the same birds at our feeders.. The Blue Jays haven't come back yet. They are here from late Spring until mid-Fall... Then they disappear for the winter (at least from my house).
Beautiful dogwood... Ours haven't started thinking about blooming yet.

Still haven't seen a hummer. They usually come up to the window and demand I put a feeder out. They are pushy little guys.
Nests are being built like crazy here and I love laying in my hammock listening to the chatter.

That tree is stunning - I've seen several this last week but that's one of the prettiest. We have one regular hummingbird visitor and one who comes a couple of times a day but the finches have been here for several weeks now. blessings, marlene

Awesome dogwood! We haven't seen a hummer yet, but "get hummingbird feeders out" is still on our To Do list. That could be the reason.
