Today's Flowers - May 10

Iris

More beautiful flowers from my daughter's garden. Nearly all the flowers in my own garden are day lilies, which have not yet begun to bloom. Daughter's yard is full of a variety of blooming plants, and I've been taking advantage of having them available to photograph.
According to Wikipedia, Iris is a genus of between 200–300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species.

The purple blue iris by my front door is still in bud, so yours was good to see as an appetiser. Wonder how they got the name flags? Or is that a Brit thing?

What a beautiful photo. Our Iris have been getting beat up by the storms and heavy rain, but are still beautiful.

Beautiful photo. My mother planted irises behind our detatched garage because that area was very hard to mow. It was always a pleasant sight.

M irises seem finished blooming. The bulbs are very old--like 30 years + - and need thinned or replaced.

Your shot is beautiful

Gorgeous Iris! I enjoyed your tall grass humor in your last post. : ) The fescue is so tall here I can barely see the tip of Brandy’s tail when she walks through it, and with more rain on the way, I think I am going to need a bush hog to get through it.

Hope you had a lovely Mother’s Day!

I've never seen this color of Iris before and methinks I may go in search of some bulbs for next year. I had deeper purple iris with a yellow center ... brilliant yellow ... and white with yellow centers that come up each year in my yard. They're long gone now after blooming much too early this year.
Hugs and blessings,

Ah, the Iris! What a lovely flower, they combine a look of fragility with impressive structural strength. I was once giving some painting lessons to someone, and it was when the Iris flowers were at their best. I pitched both our easels outside and, as we began painting, rain started to fall. The rain did not upset the irises, and, as we were working in oils, it was possible to continue for quite some time. Great fun actually, and colours often look wonderful in the rain. I seem to remember that my wife (being as sensible soul) finally "put her foot down" and called a halt to the lesson as she was afraid that I might cause my pupil to catch cold, or grow webbed feet, or worse! Best Wishes, P.

Just gorgeous, Pat. Thanks for the info. I did not know there were that many types of iris or that their name means "rainbow"!
