Today's Flowers - February 20, 2011

Lantana (variety)

The collage above is of photos I took in the summer of 2010. The various Lantana blooms were on plants  in my own garden or in that of my daughter. I'm looking forward to having more of  them this summer. I think they are lovely flowers, and they grow well in our climate. More information on Lantana may be found by clicking on the link below the collage.

Today's Flowers is a weekly Meme created by Luiz Santilli, Jr. and currently hosted by Luiz Santilli, Jr., Denise in Virginia, Laerte Pupo and Sandy Carlson, and the home site may be found here.  I invite you to visit Today's Flowers to see lovely flower photos from all around the world. If you have a flower photo of your own to share, information about joining the group may be found on the 'Procedure' page.

I think Lantana are pretty but since they are poisonous to horses, I used to do all I could to get rid of the plants when I had livestock. Always find it odd that they are for sale in stores.

Beautiful flowers, Pat... I love Lantana--but don't have any here... The colors are fabulous.

Have a wonderful Sunday.
Hugs,
Betsy

Patti Fortunately, I have no horses or other livestock which might be adversely affected by these plants, but I do have butterfly visitors that seem to enjoy the nectar.

Interesting about the horses. I learn something every day.

Most animals seem instinctively to know what not to eat, but there are lots of exceptions. I remember Daddy sprayed for something in our native pastures that cows used to erroneously eat--don't remember the name.

The photos are beautiful.

Lantanas will not grow for me, they are too tender.
I could grow them as tender annuals in a pot but I always find pot grown specimen of any sort a poor substitute for the real thing.

I've tried to grow all sorts of half hardy and tender plants, our winters are just too cold and wet. Better stick with what does well.

They are very pretty flowers. I don't see much of them here, I don't know the reason why.
Nice mosaic arrangement.

Very pretty colours!!
Every year I plant a few Lantana plants in hanging baskets for butterflies.
I know they belong to the poisonous flowers.
Here is a list from wikipedia List of poisonous plants:

Very interesting to read!!

You obviously have a beautiful garden. I like your collage of these pretty Lantanas. I didn't realize that they were considered a weed in parts of the world.

Your gorgeous flowers fill me with warmth. Thank you.

Hi Pat, you have a colorful variety of lantana. I love these plants because the butterflies visit them. In the tropics, lantana grows in the wild but we don't see the kinds of colours that you've posted. These are indeed beautiful!

I like Lantana, and so do many of our pollinators, but we can only grow it in a hanging basket which comes indoors over the winter. Some of our winters are just too cold.

(PS Thanks for visiting Hodgepodgery, and your kind words about my photos there. I take photos of everything, but try to keep those posted on Nature in the Ozarks to nature theme. Everything else goes onto Hodgepodgery.

It's sad the Broadway Street bridge over the Arkansas will be replaced. The other bridges in that area range from boring to ugly. It's the only one that's architecturally attractive.)
